“This is a collection of over one thousand short poems … less than
one-fourth of which had appeared in their original form in ten published books,
and many of which nevertheless have undergone additions and deletions so that they
have the status of new poems in this Collection. Only selections from those old
books appear here. The bulk of the poems in this Collection are new creations after
my retirement from the Service in 1984; altogether new poems constitute more than
three-fourth of this book.”
