_**About the Author**_
Dr. Kalyani Thiru received her Ph.D. in English from the
University of Toledo, Ohio, in 2004. She has been affiliated with the University
of Madras and has taught in various colleges and universities in the United States
for more than a decade.

_**About the Book**_
_**Body Poetics: Modern Women’s Poetry**_ is Dr. Thiru’s doctoral
dissertation, under the supervision of Professor Clarence Lindsay. Dr. Thiru draws
on women theorists like Helen Cixous, Madeleine Gagnon, Simone de Beauvoir and Luce
Irigaray in her examination of philosophical, religious and romantic notions in
the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop, Stevie Smith, Edna Millay, Emily Dickinson, Gwendolyn
Brooks and Nikki Giovanni. Professor Lindsay observes in her foreword to the book,“
Kalyani shows that women theorists, in their objective to reclaim body and mind
from socio-political shackles for women, identify experience rather than rules as
the defining principle of existence… Women poets too, Kalyani argues, resist settling
for simple solutions and easy resolutions.”
