_**About the Author**_
Joe Winter was born in 1943. He took up poetry at university
where he studied Latin and Greek and English literature. From 1967 to 1993 he taught
English in London comprehensive schools, and in 1994 moved to Kolkata where he taught
part-time before returning to England in 2006. In Kolkata he wrote a number of articles
for _The Statesman_ and other journals on literary and general topics. He has published
translations of Rabindranath Tagore’s _Gitanjali, Lipika, Atmaparichay_ (as co-translator),
a selection of Tagore’s poems first to last (_The Golden Boat_); a selection of
the poems of Jibanananda Das (_Naked Lonely Hand_), and Das’s _Rupasi Bangla_ (_Bengal
the Beautiful_). In addition he has published an account of his stay in India, _Calcutta
Song_. His more recent works are translations of _Beowulf_ and the Middle English
poem _Pearl_; a reading of Shakespeare’s Sonnets (_Two Loves I Have_); and an exploration
of _Hamlet_ (_Hide Fox, and All After_). **Writers Workshop**, India, has brought
out all of Joe Winter’s poetry to date; this is his 21st volume.

_In Memoriam_
 _Arabinda Ray_

Remember him in his variety,
a manager of men. Good company was in his gift. His
mind was deep and free and visible the soul. Adversity was simply met: for half
a century’s span a polio case – but never a victim he. He worked and travelled far.
A businessman who scanned the roots of the economy, who offered a pragmatic empathy,
who drank deep of the well of poetry, who knew the arts, the pattern of history,
the tides of the present time … here was a man to grace an age. _Now to his memory_
_let silence speak as only silence can._
