_**About the Book**_
In her preface to the book, Syam writes:

“Kaikeyi. The vamp of the _Ramayana_. The wicked in contrast to the two good queens–
Kaushalya and Sumitra. But so interesting. Not totally black nor fully white but
a character in shades of grey. So human. Not perfect. A warm-hearted, complex woman.

_**Kaikeyi**_ is a work of imagination. It is not based on historical facts nor
completely on the _Ramayana_. It is only when events fit this fascinating woman
that they are brought into sharp focus.

I wanted to make Ayodhya into a mere background for Kaikeyi. But the city became
a character – as jealous and as wilful as Queen Kaikeyi herself.

Kaikeyi. Gentle, stubborn, arrogant, confused. A woman bent on getting her own way
even if it ultimately destroys her happiness.”

I have not read a simpler, more convincing narrative. Explains the character, actions,
motivations of Kaikeyi without demonizing or eulogising one of the most hated women
of the Ramayana. In a few short verses, Amreeta Syam has done a stellar job of explaining(
not justifying), Dasharatha, Kaikeyi and Rama. A refreshing, enlightening read.
Thank you Writers Workshop for bringing this gem to the readers.
