> It was a serendipitous tribute to Rassundari Devi, the woman who wrote the first
> full-length autobiography in Bengali, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this
> year.
>
> She was feted appropriately at the International Translation Day conference headlined“
> Linguistic Diversity and Language Rights”, organised by the International Society
> for Intercultural Studies and Research and Virasat Art Publication.
>
> At the event, held on September 30 under the stewardship of Dr Sudipto Chatterjee
> and professor Sutanuka Ghosh Roy, I introduced the revised edition of Rassundari
> Devi’s _Amar Jiban (My Life)_, published, revised and annotated by Ananda Lal
> of Writers Workshop, and translated from Bengali by Enakshi Chatterjee.
>
> The conjoined events of International Translation Day, bookmarked as a UNESCO
> initiative, and the landmark 150 years of _Amar Jiban_ hit their target: translation
> is now considered a planetary marker of the importance of cultural exchange between
> communities, economies, and people …
>
> Rassundari was self-taught and coined the remarkable word “_jitakshara_“, meaning
> a person who had triumphed over the written word. But it was not just the word
> she had triumphed over; she also triumphed despite the death of her children and
> the massive challenges she faced from the patriarchy.
>
> Ananda Lal told me: “I retranslated the book because I thought, to celebrate the
> 150th year of its publication, we should do full justice to her historic, extremely
> important, prose-cum-verse work. Those who can’t read Bangla need to know about
> a woman’s life in the mid-19th century first-hand. I also annotated the book heavily
> because a non-Hindu wouldn’t understand many of her references. In fact, many
> Hindus today wouldn’t comprehend them either! There is a huge diasporic audience
> too who must have access to it.”

_**About the Author**_
Anish Chakravarty was born and raised in Kanpur and has
a doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of Delhi. He has been teaching
philosophy for over a decade. He writes poetry shaped by memory, reflection, and
the quiet intensity of lived moments. His work has appeared in limited-circulation
literary publications._** moments unfinished**_ marks his continuing engagement
with verse as a form of inward exploration.

_**About the Book**_
Designed and published as a pocket book, a note by the poet
on his writing process is shared below.

> “_**moments unfinished**_ emerged from my experience of reflecting over moments
> that might otherwise pass unnoticed — an encounter, a memory, a silence, a loss,
> a question, or simply the changing light of a day. I did not begin with the intention
> of writing a book; the poems gradually became a way of attending to experience
> and allowing uncertainty to remain uncertain. Many of these pieces explore what
> cannot quite be held: time, love, identity, memory, meaning, and the fleeting
> nature of our lives. The title reflects this unfinishedness, not as incompleteness
> to be corrected, but as something intrinsic to being human. Writing these poems
> became, for me, a journey of observing without always resolving, and of finding
> that sometimes a question, a silence, or a moment left open can say more than
> an answer.”

Time drifts past like a river,
its currents murmuring secrets only the shore remembers…
each wave speaks, then vanishes, leaving silence in its wake.

17

Speak up for your stance,
stand accused of profanity. Stay silent, bear the guilt
of surrendering speech, turn to propriety. What remains?

38

We imagine happiness,
so wide, so blinding, it feels like light. We run toward
it, though we’ve never known it, and if it comes quietly, unexpectedly, we wonder:
was this what I waited for?

47

That feeling—
when someone you knew is no longer there. Gone years ago, yet you
remain. Yet with each year, the memory holds him closer, stronger than time itself.

_**About the Book**_
A must-read for anyone interested in exploring the social,
female and gender history of India through the lens of personal narratives, this
is the complete, unabridged translation of Rassundari Dasi / Devi’s memoir from
Bengali to English. It has in recent years been recognised as indispensable in the
context of understanding the throughline of feminism and gender studies in the country.
At 88, Rassundari writes about her life (she was born in 1810 and passed away in
1899) from her earliest memories as a child, focusing on the everyday, her thoughts,
and the solace she gained from her faith in God. It is a fascinating account of
a woman relying on her trust in the spiritual to survive the gruelling labour expected
of her because of her gender and prevalent social norms that would now rightly be
considered as extremely traumatic conditions.

Rassundari taught herself to read and write. She says: “It is such a pleasure to
see the women today enjoying so much freedom. These days, parents of a single girl
child take so much care to educate her. But we had to struggle so much just for
that.”

**As a tribute on the sesquicentenary of the book, we publish this new, full edition,
thoroughly revised and annotated by our director,** **Professor Ananda Lal**. It
includes the original introductions by Jyotirindranath Tagore and Dinesh Chandra
Sen and the afterword from our 2022 edition by Professor Sutanuka Ghosh (Department
of English, Jadavpur University, Kolkata).

of Tagore, she also wrote original works in Bengali and English. Contrary to the
report printed in _The Telegraph_ (Kolkata), that her first book of English poems
appeared in Oxford in 1979, she, like many Indian poets in English, entrusted **

We also brought out two volumes of her English translations of the Bengali poet

_**About the Book**_

> Michael Chacko Daniels is the quintessential traveler. His life and his poetry
> move between worlds. His journey has carried him from his early years in Bombay,
> steeped in the traditions of an ancient Syrian Christian community, to San Francisco,
> the city he now calls home.
>
> His traveler’s haibun is a confluence of those diverse influences. But it also
> embraces the world. Starting at Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral on the outskirts of
> the oldest Chinatown in the U.S., Daniels makes multiple leaps in time and places.
> His mind wanders to Rome and Paris. Yet also to his own past as a young immigrant
> from Bombay. The literary vehicle he chooses for his poetry is the haibun, perfected
> by Matsuo Bashō a continent away, more than three centuries ago. All this makes
> _Falling & Rising in San Francisco_ a powerful travel narrative.
>
> The haibun has often been used by travelers to tell their stories. Daniels turns
> to it as well. We join him as he walks down California Street, sits in Old Saint
> Mary’s Cathedral, listens to Debussy, remembers earlier life in San Francisco,
> and reemerges again into the city. Interspersed between each of these, Daniels
> creates moments brought alive by sensory details, historical context, and personal
> reflection. It is time that meanders and gives his poetry its reflective quality.
>
> The poetic style interweaves prose with short verse. His poetry combines minimalist
> stanzas, single-line phrases, and vertical kinetic poems. Even as the prose sets
> the context, the poetry gives the haibun both its movement and melody. We are
> left not just with poetry, but the lyricism of a song of the road.

Professor Harry Aveling (PhD, Malay Studies, National

holds honorary appointments in Translation Studies at Monash University, and Asian
Studies at La Trobe University, both in Melbourne, Australia. He has translated
extensively from Indonesian and Malay, and co-translated from Hindi. In 1991 he
received the Anugerah Pengembangan Sastera (Literary Development Award) for his “

by W. S. Rendra (1981); **_The Interior Landscape of the Heart: Tamil Poetry from

published his translations of the _**[Hikayat Seri Rama: The Malay Ramayana](https://writersworkshopindia.com/books/hikayat-seri-rama-the-malay-ramayana/)**_(

2022), and [**_Hikayat Pandawa Lima: A Malay Mahabharata_**](https://writersworkshopindia.com/books/hikayat-pandawa-lima/)(
2024).

_**About the Book**_
This is the third book in Professor Aveling’s series of translations
of the Malay renditions of the _Ramayana_ and _Mahabharata_. In his introduction
to the book, he writes:

“It has been estimated that there are over 300 versions of the _Ramayana_…

This book adds a new _Ramayana _epic from the Malay world. It may have come to Brunei
from the empires of Srivijaya (South Sumatra, 7th-13th centuries) and Majapahit (
east Java, 13th-15th centuries), both of which carried Indian culture throughout
the archipelago. The Malay version may also have derived from Melaka (1400-1511),
which had a rich literary tradition. It is clear that the Rama story was also well
known among the kingdoms in the Sulu Sea (Juan Francisco 1969) to the northeast
of Brunei…

**The State and Warfare**
The text presented here starts in mid-sentence, and lacks
both the beginning and ending of that whole Rama narrative. The story of Siti (Sita)
Dewi’s kidnapping by Maharaja Rawana is not told. She first appears in the context
of Hanuman’s bringing her a message from Sahirama (Rama). There are no stories of
her birth, their marriage, her early time with Rama, her testing by fire, or her
final return into the earth again.

The text derives from a barely Islamic environment. It contains neither poetry nor
philosophy. Sahirama is descended from Bisnu (Vishnu) but is not treated as a god.
Instead he is respected as a superior being, who implicitly unites two religious
traditions. On his mother’s side, he is the grandson of Bisnu. On his father’s side,
he is also the grandson of the Muslim Prophet, Adam, who is greatly revered in the
_Hikayat_.”

_**About the Author**_
Anirudh Acharya holds a Ph.D. in mathematics and is a visual
artist who writes haiku and short poetry. As a mathematician by training, he works
in a field far from literature, but he has long been drawn to the written word,
especially poetry in brief forms. He has been reading and writing haiku-like poetry
for many years. His work reflects on impermanence, quiet moments, and the spaces
between thought and feeling. This is his first collection of poems.

_**About the Book**_
Designed and published as a pocket book. An excerpt from the
preface is quoted below.

> “A lot has been written about haiku, and how a good haiku needs to be constructed.
> I would rather not talk about any of that. I am therefore happy to refer to every
> poem in the book as being haiku-like.
>
> Many of these poems came to me when I stopped trying. I am often left not with
> the feeling of having created something, but of having caught something.
>
> It begins with noticing. A moment with quiet weight, like the jasmine in someone’s
> hair, the gesture someone makes, or the sunlight on a cat’s body. When you pay
> it attention, it gives you the words, without effort. Poetry that asks you to
> step aside.
>
> I live in Chennai, where I have spent almost all my life. I trust that as you

_For Our Fathers: Keeping the Faith_

Famous heroes never die; they stand like demigods,
 Victorious in adversity and
all the world applauds. Transcending human nature, their names ring through the
years For they have faced most daunting odds and conquered all their fears.

But heroism thrives in honest lives of humble dignity
 (All honour give to those
who live in quiet simplicity); For the selfless ones who cared for us have greater
spirit shown By raising us from childhood until childhood’s days have flown.

Not for them the burning fire and fury of Achilles,
The fame that’s found on a
battle ground in the killing fields; Not for them the sacrifice of Horatio at the
bridge, Standing alone at the gate of Rome, defying sacrilege.

They did not hear the war cry of Cuchulainn at the ford
 Nor see King Arthur brandishing
Excalibur, his sword, But they have seen the beauty of the earth and of the sky
And of their children’s promise as each day flew by.

Their courage bears the hallmark of a gentle, kinder way
 And seeks not immortality
in a classic, epic lay. But daily care for our welfare, the love that they have
shown, Makes them heroes in our eyes, known to us alone.

They kept the faith down through the years as they’ve grown old and grey;
 We who
remain must watch them wane before they slip away Into the darkness … or the light…
where all the heroes go Like Beowulf, or Perseus, or Hector, long ago.

Thus our fate, as time decrees, to watch them pass from grace,
 And visit them on
birthdays, to say a prayer and place Flowers at their resting place, for though
their days have gone, We remember all their love, and when heroism shone.
