In February 1987 the Institute of Book Publishing organised its inaugural ceremony
in New Delhi “to acknowledge, acclaim and honour those who have made outstanding
contributions to the promotion of publishing and the cause of book culture in India.”

The first persons so awarded and inducted were, posthumously, Jawaharlal Nehru,
K. M. Munshi, D. R. Mankekar, M. N. Rao; and P. Lal, Dev Raj Chawla (of UBS), and
the Sahitya Pravarthaka Cooperative Society of Kerala. The citation for P. Lal stated
that “Lal’s WRITERS WORKSHOP has grown into a movement with an ethos of its own.
It has succeeded in furthering the cause of Indian poetry in English despite its
limited resources: a tribute to Lal’s devotion and energy. No one has been able
to create and sustain a similar effort.”
